Ashgabat, 7 November 2017: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Economy of Turkmenistan and the Global Environment Facility have partnered together to improve water resources management in Turkmenistan.

Within the joint project “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Sustainable Water Management in Turkmenistan”, UNDP held a seminar presenting innovative technologies and international best practices in efficient irrigation techniques in agriculture.

Participants of the seminar were familiarized with the construction project at Khivaabad-Kahka, a water conduit for water supply in Kahka. This plan will be implemented in the next few months. In addition, the project specialists told participants about the positive impact on the environment by adhering to the sensible use of water resources.

“Construction of the water pipeline allows eliminating the filtration losses and improve water supply in Kahka,” says Muhammed Artykov, UNDP expert on water issues “The project will also help to eliminate the need to use water wells and allow saving energy by disabling pumps.”

The seminar was attended by the experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Economy of Turkmenistan, local administration officials from the Ahal region and Geokdepe district, and the state Committee for Environment Protection and Land Resources.

The seminar served as a platform for an exchange of views and experiences in the field of development and the research of infrastructure for irrigation norms.
