Ashgabat, 5 February 2019: More than 200 teachers of Turkmenistan took part in one-day trainings organized by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan. The participants increased their knowledge on climate change and discussed the process of adapting it to the national context of the interactive learning toolkit “Climate Box”.

This event is held as part of UNDP’s regional project “Climate Box” is implemented by the UNDP with the financial support of the Russian Federation (RF) through the Climate Window of the UNDP-Russia Development Trust Fund.” The trainings were held in five regions of Turkmenistan during the course of November 2018 and January 2019.

Participants familiarized themselves with the content of the “Climate Box” and conducted an overview of the work conducted by the working group of teachers adapting the learning materials to the national context for introduction at schools. During the sessions, national experts who took part in the regional conference of the project, shared their knowledge on the use of the “Climate Box” and adapting materials on the topic of climate change for schools and extracurricular activities.

It should also be noted that the training provided an interactive platform for discussing the conditions of the first international competition for school students. The qualifying stage of the competition is being held in the countries participating in the project until the end of February 2019. The winners of the qualifying stage will have the opportunity to participate in the final competition in Almaty, Kazakhstan on April 24-27, 2019.

In 2016, UNDP began work on implementation of the project adapting interactive education materials “Climate Box” in the countries of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. Currently, the project is implemented in seven countries: Armenia, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
