UNDP helps to promote empowerment of women in agriculture

The workshop on women participation in decision-making process at the local level, organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan was held in Turkmenabat on 21 November 2018.

The event was organized within the framework of the joint project of UNDP and the State Committee for Environment Protection and Land Resources of Turkmenistan together with Global Environment Facility “Supporting climate resilient livelihoods in agricultural communities in drought-prone areas of Turkmenistan”.

The training seminar, facilitated by international expert Gulnara Ibrayeva with the gender focus in agriculture, brought together over 20 participants from rural areas of Lebap region to raise their awareness on the gender and its role in agriculture sector as well as gender mainstreaming. Moreover, at the panel discussion on career opportunities and challenges for young women in rural areas, UNDP expert underlined the importance of empowering young women and girls as an essential element to achieve prosperity and sustainable development in the agriculture sector of the country.

”This workshop is aimed for women  and for men, as both of them have an equal role to play in strengthening Gender equality principles and overall, in the development of the society. It is important that women and man have equal opportunities to engage  in all processes” said Natia Natsvlishvili, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, who took part at this workshop.

At the end, the special attention was paid to sharing the best practices on how women in the agriculture can develop strategies to improve management of natural resources. The workshop was interactive, and served as a platform for discussing of women's role on developing local adaptation plans for the development of rural regions.
