Ashgabat, November 14, 2017: The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), together with the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan, are working in partnership for the preparation of significant national reports to the UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies. Within the framework of the joint project "Assistance in implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan of Turkmenistan", a seminar was held on the preparation of the third periodic report of Turkmenistan on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). The seminar was attended by members of the working group of the Interdepartmental Commission for ensuring the correct implementation of Turkmenistan's international commitments in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law and the UNDP international expert Ms. Kirsten Roberts.
During the discussions between the participants, there was a constructive exchange of views on improving the UPR reporting process and an overview of Turkmenistan's interaction with the UPR Committee. Furthermore, recommendations were proposed to improve the country's existing reporting programs on human rights. The UNDP international expert, Ms. Kirsten Roberts, in turn, conducted a detailed presentation on the technical requirements for the third round of the UPR report.
"This seminar was organized to assist Turkmenistan in the preparation of the Universal Periodic Report, which should be submitted to UN member states in April-May 2018. We very much hope that the consultations and discussions will help the working group improve its knowledge of the latest developments in the UPR reporting section and improve the quality in accordance with international requirements, "said Vitalie Vremis, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan.
As a result of the seminar, the participants expressed their shared ideas on the relevance and timeliness of its conduct, as well as the need for further work on the preparation of Turkmenistan's third periodic report on the Universal Periodic Review.Contact Information
