Mar 10, 2017

Ashgabat, 1-5 March 2017: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Institute for Democracy and Human Rights under the president of Turkmenistan held first training in promotion and protection of human rights for Ashgabat and Ahal bar associations. The training is held with financial support of the UK Embassy.

More than 30 lawyers took part in the training under the preparation process for implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan. The Action Plan was signed by the President of Turkmenistan in January 2016.

“International law, especially in the field of human rights, is very broad and develops rapidly. Each lawyer shall keep up with modern trends to be able to provide timely support to its clients,” explains UNDP trainer Olga Sadovskaya.

The purpose of the seminar is to prepare lawyers to disseminate the knowledge on human rights among their colleagues and groups of the population that they work with.

This is the first in the series of trainings in Turkmenistan. The seminars aim to familiarize members of the bar associations with their role in implementation of the National Human Rights Action Plan.

Participants were provided educational training materials for their further use. The materials include the topics of international law, UN treaty bodies, conventions and other mechanism for protection and promotion of human rights.

Participants also discussed the legal practices and their work experiences in Turkmenistan and the recommendations of the UN treat bodies provided in response to the periodic reports submitted by Turkmenistan.

By the end of the seminar, members of Ashgabat and Ahal bar associations refreshed their knowledge and improved their understanding on international commitments of Turkmenistan in the field of human rights, the content of the national legislation and opportunities of application of the international mechanisms suggested by the UN at the global level.

UNDP reaffirms its commitment to provide technical support to the Government of Turkmenistan in the field of promotion of human rights.
