Turkmenistan’s Central TB Lab Scores Excellent in Quality AssessmentDec 19, 2016
Ashgabat, 19 December 2016: The Centralized Laboratory for Infectious Diseases of Turkmenistan has passed quality certification for external quality assessment by the Supra-national Reference Laboratory in Germany.
The cooperation between the Centralized Laboratory and the Supranational Reference Laboratory - the Institute of Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine in Gauting (Germany) is supported from 2014 by UNDP TB project financed by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
“Obtaining the quality certificate confirms the high professional level of Centralized Laboratory, and means reliability and accuracy of the test results,” says Mrs. Jacinta Barrins, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme in Turkmenistan. “Our project has also upgraded regional TB laboratories in Mary, Dashoguz and Lebab. This means that the population of these regions have access to the same high-tech methods of diagnosis of tuberculosis, as in the capital.”
One of the goals of the UNDP/ Global Fund project is to improve the laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis. In this regard, TB project helped Centralized Laboratory introduce advanced technologies for detection of tuberculosis, including automatic culture growth, rapid molecular genetic methods and tests for sensitivity to antibiotics. For performing the high-tech tests, the Centralized Laboratory has obtained appropriate infrastructure, proper biosafety measures and maintenance.
“Centralized Laboratory has already delivered high quality services when our partnership started. Its interest in and openness to new technologies is remarkable. We congratulate the Laboratory to the successful completion of the external quality assessment which was one of the most difficult tests in the past years and are very much looking forward to continue our collaboration in future,” said Dr. Harald Hoffmann, Medical Director&Manager of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine in Gauting (Germany).
Regular quality control guarantees that cases of tuberculosis have not been missed or falsely diagnosed. With the support of the UNDP/Global Fund TB project the quality certification of regional TB laboratories will be done in 2017.
UNDP/Global Fund TB project works in Turkmenistan since 2010. The project delivers quality laboratory reagents for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, trains laboratory specialists, introduces diagnostic algorithms. The projects supported equipping all regions of Turkmenistan with GenXpert machines for molecular genetic detection of tuberculosis within 2 hours. This allows quick and accurate diagnosis of TB and immediate start of the treatment.Contact information
