New UN House Opened in Ashgabat, TurkmenistanNov 28, 2016
Ashgabat, 26 November 2016: H.E Mr Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov President of Turkmenistan and H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations took part in the opening ceremony of the new UN House in Ashgabat.
The opening ceremony started with a flag-raising ceremony, performed by two UN guards and two Turkmen guards. The heads of United Nations Country Team, Regional representatives of UN Missions, Member of the Cabinet of Ministers and several ministers participated in the opening ceremony. The flag raising was followed by the ribbon cutting ceremony and congratulatory speeches.
Ms. Jacinta Barrins, Resident Coordinator of the UN in Turkmenistan invited the honored guests to visit some rooms in the new building. UN Secretary- General and the President addressed the Staff of all UN agencies in the new conference hall. The UN Secretary General expressed his gratitude to the government for the generous support and added: “The new UN House is more than a structure. It is a symbol of our strong partnership. It is a hub where we will work together to realize a better future for this country and for its people. Let us resolve to strengthen this partnership even more as we advance towards achieving a better future for all”.
The President noted the successful joint projects, including the many global initiatives adopted by Turkmenistan aimed at the provision of universal peace, security and stability. He said “the trust rendered to our State by the competent UN organizations is a distinguishing feature of this long partnership”.
The UN Secretary-General and the President signed the Visitors’ book.
The President and UN Secretary- General then toured the large UN house of 5,000sqm complex with a site area of 10,000 sqm. At the end of the opening ceremony, the Head of the State on behalf of the Government of Turkmenistan presented a vehicle of representative class to the Head of the UN mision.
