UNDP Turkmenistan prepares new project
Ashgabat, 4 August 2016: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the State Committee for Nature Protection and Land Management held a workshop to discuss the idea and collect recommendations for the new project on sustainable urban development.
Representatives of the line agencies (Ministry of Energy, Industry, Transportation, Communal Services, Hyakimliks of Ashgabat and Turkmenbashy, State Committee for Sports and tourism, the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and others) shared what ongoing activities and programmes in the field of city management are already implemented on the national level, and provided ideas that could be incorporated into the new project. Participants also discussed the achievements of the UNDP activities that could also be included or promoted through the new project.
The new project on urban development is important as Turkmenistan actively develops its urban infrastructure, which is one of the sustainable development goals soon to be nationalized by the country.
The global trend toward increase of the population and geographical size of the cities is inevitable, as UNDP international expert Mark Chao explains. “In 2008, for the first time in the history, the population of the urban areas started exceeding rural. Thus, under the condition of the scarce resources and the burden on the environment, it is vital to make sure that the high quality of living of the residents of the cities is maintained.”
The new project is expected to include activities in the area of reducing of the transportation burden in the cities, optimization of the waste management, energy efficiency and others. Representatives agreed to discuss and send their recommendations on the proposed activities to be reviewed and included into the draft project document by October 2016.Contact information
