The newest trends in establishing framework for local economic development in Turkmenistan were discussed by members of the Turkmen Parliament at a round table.

The various models for creating a framework for local economic development have been introduced and discussed during the round table with the participation of the   Members of Parliament (MPs), experts of Mejlis of Turkmenistan, representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Development, Ministry of Finance of Turkmenistan, the Institute of Strategic Planning and Economic Development of Turkmenistan and archins of Akhal velayat.

The representatives of these institutions learned about the experience of EU and CIS countries, as well as the international standards applied in the regional development, governance and legislation reform for local authorities and self-government bodies. These knowledge are expected to be applied by the elected representatives of people, central and local government officials when developing new policies and legislation related to the local economic development.

“Participation in the roundtable meeting enabled us to learn the international experience and best national practices in preparing and conducting large-scale reforms in the area of local economic and social development”, said Mr. Ishanguly Kerimov, representative of Mejlis of Turkmenistan. “We now know how to enhance the role of the Parliament in implementation of reforms, improvement of legislation for local authorities and local self-government”.

UNDP’s international consultant Mr. Algirdas Petkevicius, who conducted the roundtable, also had meetings and consultations with MPs and representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Development of Turkmenistan. He discussed issues related to capacity building of MPs in applying norms of international law in the national legislation regulating functions of local authorities and local self-governance bodies in implementation of the Government’s social-economic development programmes at the local and regional level.

The roundtable meeting was held in the framework of cooperation of UNDP and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan under the joint project “Parliamentary Development Support Programme".
