    National consultation workshop on climate change impacts in Turkmenistan

    In the last week of January, a two-day workshop on national stakeholder consultations was jointly organised within the Environment and Security Initiative’s (ENVSEC) Project “Climate change and security in Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Southern Caucasus” and Climate Risk Management Project in Turkmenistan.

    Building a water user partnership for better water management

    A three-day training on “Partnership of water users at the local level” was conducted in three pilot regions within the framework of the project on “Addressing climate change risks to farming system in Turkmenistan, at the national and local levels”, implemented by the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan jointly with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Adaptation Fund. The trainings attracted the heads and officials from the local self-government bodies, local land and water users, the employees of the local water resources management bodies and members from the Council of Elders and youth organizations.

    Land users learn adaptation approaches to climate change

    Within the framework of joint project of the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) “Addressing climate change risks to farming system in Turkmenistan at national and community levels”, a seminar was held in Ashgabat on the topic on "Strengthening the capacity at national and local levels for sustainable management of water resources in climate change realities."

    UNDP, Turkmenistan to strengthen partnership in national capacity development and institutional building

    The Government of Turkmenistan and UNDP have agreed to increase government cost-sharing for UNDP activities in the country. Such statement was made during the visit of Ms. Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of UNDP Regional Bureau for Europe and CIS.

    Turkmenistan students’ intellectual game celebrates the victory of Human Rights

    A sense of pride, joy and intellectual satisfaction prevailed in the National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights of Turkmenistan where on 9 December students of major universities of the country competed for a winner’s cup by answering sophisticated questions on human rights. The intellectual game was devoted to the celebrations of the Human Rights Day in Turkmenistan under the motto “EQUAL HUMAN RIGHTS FOR EVERYBODY”. The event also brought together faculty members of the universities, National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights staff and representatives of the UN agencies in Turkmenistan, who together with students commemorated the day of adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

    From employment to social inclusion

    Representatives of ministries and governmental agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and international and local companies have discussed policy making and employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the Consultation Meeting and Forum devoted to the International Day of People with Disabilities. The theme of this year’s observance is “Theme: “Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development for all”.

    Turkmen officials drafted the Human Rights Action Plan of Turkmenistan

    Members of the Working Group of the Interdepartmental Commission on ensuring Turkmenistan’s compliance with international obligations in the field of human rights and humanitarian law met on 26 – 29 November 2013 in the Turkmen National Institute of Democracy and Human Rights under the President of Turkmenistan to finalize the drafting of the National Human Rights Action Plan (NHRAP) of Turkmenistan. The meeting was the last in a series of several interactions that led to the final draft.

    Capacity building in water management

    A national workshop was held in Ashgabat focusing on improvement of water related legislation of Turkmenistan in the context of climate change. The workshop was held within the project “Addressing Climate Change Risks to Farming Systems in Turkmenistan at National and Community Level” jointly implemented by the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and financed by the Adaptation Fund (AF). Major issues related to improvement of the Water Code of Turkmenistan (adopted in 2004) were discussed at the workshop.

    Management of water and land resources with participation of the local population

    Economic, environmental and social issues related to the rural development were discussed during the workshop. The phases and implementation schedule of the adaptation activities aimed at protection and efficient use of land and water resources in the climate change context were agreed with the local people.

    Strengthening South-South cooperation

    A two-day workshop on introducing the technology of laser leveling of irrigated land was held within the framework of the UNDP project of Climate Risk Management in Turkmenistan. The main purpose of the workshop was to increase the capacity of local communities and develop South-South cooperation as a key mechanism in sharing expertise, experience and information.

    Expanding knowledge in teaching visually and hearing impaired children

    Teachers, who work in specialized schools for visually and hearing impaired children, and specialists in the area of special education for children with disabilities from the Departments of Education from Ashgabat and 5 velayats participated in two five-day workshops on basics of sign language, typhlo pedagogics and methods of teaching general subjects to visually, hearing, and speech impaired children.

    Mobilizing local communities in response to climate change impact on farming systems

    Local communities living in three different agro-ecological regions of Turkmenistan of Karakum (desert), Nohur (mountain) and Sakarchaga (Mary province oasis) have recently got together to learn new knowledge and experience relating to climate change adaptation measures and discuss increasing climate change impact on water resources available to their agricultural and horticultural activities.
