UNDP Statement on Turkmenistan Decision to Sign Paris Agreement

Ashgabat, 30 August 2016: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) salutes the decision of the Government of Turkmenistan to sign Paris Agreement, which was adopted on 12 December 2015.

The purpose of the Paris Agreement is to enhance implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) dealing with greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in 2020.

Provisions of the Paris Agreement include commitment of the signatory states to hold increase of the global average temperature below 2 °C, increase ability to adapt to the impacts of climate change and build up resilience, and ensure consistent financial flows towards green economies and lowering of the greenhouse gas emissions.

UNDP continues to support Turkmenistan’s efforts to promote green economy and ensure mitigation and adaptation to the climate change. Currently, there are four ongoing projects in the sphere of environment and energy worth of more than USD 20 million. UNDP underlines the continuous support and investment from the side of the Government of Turkmenistan.

UNDP is also expecting adoption of the national economic programme of action on adaptation and mitigation to climate change, developed together with the Ministry of Economy and Development, which will include coordinated measures implemented together with other line ministries on promotion of the rational use of land and water and reduction of the greenhouse gas emissions in Turkmenistan.

As of August 2016, 180 UNFCCC members have signed the Paris Agreement.

UNDP is committed to support efforts and initiatives of the Government of Turkmenistan in the sphere of reduction of the climate change effects.
