UNDP Supports 3rd Year University Students to Conduct Research on Promoting Energy Efficiency in BuildingsJun 30, 2016
Ashgabat, 30 June 2016: As part of the capacity building efforts, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan, promotes and supports the training of the local cadres to ensure sustainable development and stable future of Turkmenistan.
During the course of 2015-2016, UNDP has trained and facilitated writing of the senior thesis for 2 students of the National Institute of Architecture and Construction. Students have been involved into the monitoring, data collection, installation of the energy saving equipment and measuring devices. They also worked with and as expects developing their skills and capacity in energy audit in the framework of UNDP/GEF project “Improving Energy Efficiency in the Residential Building Sector of Turkmenistan”.
“This is an important step in nurturing of the local cadres of Turkmenistan through the UNDP/GEF project. We have worked with the Turkmen State Architecture and Construction Institute for the past three years supporting the change in the curriculum, introducing the new subjects related to energy efficiency, and opening the first of its kind energy efficiency lab with support of the Samsung. Now we have established a solid programme that was approved by the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan and we are directly involved into the teaching process where we can share our experience, and provide students with the access to the first hand data on energy efficiency measures and activities undertaken by the project,” explains UNDP/GEF project manager, Irina Atamuradova.
In the scope of the project, UNDP has developed a methodology of writing of the senior thesis for the students of the energy efficiency major of the national educational institutions. This is part of the greater behavior change programme launched by UNDP in Turkmenistan. During the course of training of the students to write their senior thesis, project staff has corrected the methodology and filled in the gaps, which will now be presented to the Ministry of Education and introduced in the national universities of the country.
The first two students to prepare their senior thesis with support of UNDP/GEF project were selected at the recommendation of the Turkmen State Architecture and Construction Institute. The topics of the thesis sound as “Development and implementation of energy saving measures in the newly built residential building #8 located in the district “Parahat-7/2” and “Development and implementation of energy saving measures in the renovated residential building #51 located in the district “Parahat 3/1”. Based on the practical work that students did together with the project staff and experts, students have calculated heating capacities before and after introducing energy efficiency measures, as well as economic effects and benefits of those measures.Contact information
