Students debate on human rights and their importance in achievement of sustainable developmentOct 13, 2015
Ashgabat, 12 October 2015: The United Nations agencies in Turkmenistan have held the 3rd Annual UN Debate Cup contest among university students on the topic titled “Sustainable development and stable future must involve a deep respect for human rights and strengthening rule of law”. The event was dedicated to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the UN and adoption of the post-2015 development agenda.
More than 100 young people from five universities of Turkmenistan –Turkmen State University named after Magtymguly, International Turkmen-Turkish University, International University for Humanities and Development, State Institute of World Languages named after D. Azadi and Institute of International Relations - took part in the debate. The aim of the event was to raise awareness among young people on the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda adopted by the world leaders at the UN General Assembly during the Summit on 25-27 September 2015, and develop debating and critical thinking skills.
The Students have thoroughly prepared for the debate and expressed diverse opinions on the importance of observing human rights and rule of law to reach the SDGs, and actively discussed the place of human rights in the current development agenda and programs of Turkmenistan. The International Turkmen-Turkish University won the Cup.
The event was also attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps of Turkmenistan, UN agencies and instructors of the national universities of Turkmenistan.Contact Information
