Ashgabat, 15 September 2015: On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, heads of the UN agencies in Turkmenistan and representatives of national NGOs held a discussion on the role of public associations in the development of Turkmenistan.

“It is very important to make sure that each of the citizens feels its social responsibility. We closely cooperate with the government of Turkmenistan and contribute to the promotion of social development in the country,” noted representatives of the public associations.

NGO representatives who partner with UN agencies discussed opportunities of Turkmen public associations to participate in implementation of the national programs and the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).

The participants welcomed a suggestion to create an online discussion platform with support from UN to improve networking, exchange ideas and information on the activities and events to consider possibilities of joint action.

The UN General Assembly having established 15 September of each year as the International Day of Democracy encouraged Governments to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy. In this regard, the theme for 2015 was titled “The space for civil society”.

“The role of civil society has never been more important than this year, as the world prepares to implement a new development agenda, agreed to by all the world’s Governments,” says UN Secretary General Ban Gi-moon in his address.
