  • National ministries and UN Agencies discussed integration of Sustainable Development Goals into national programs, plans and strategies Oct 20, 2016

    Ashgabat 20 October, 2016 – The Turkmen Government and United Nations discussed the next steps in integrating the approved Sustainable Development Goals into 2017 national plans and medium term programs. The meeting was co- chaired by Mr. Vepa Hajiyev, the Deputy Ministry of Foreign and Ms Jacinta Barrins UN Resident Coordinator. The round table meeting held in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs gathered Deputy Ministers from over 40 national ministries, other agencies and non-governmental organizations, as well as heads of UN Agencies represented in Turkmenistan. The participants discussed updates on the current status of implementation of the three-stage SDG roll out process adopted by Turkmenistan. Stage One was completed in September 2016 when the government formal adopted a list of 17 SDGs, 148 targets and 198 indicators the country intends to implement over the next 15 years. The Participants discussed stage two which is about integrating the approved Sustainable Development Goals into plans and medium term programs. This stage has already begun as the UN is supporting the Ministry of Economy and Development with integrating SDGs into the Presidential Programme of Socio-Economic Development 2017-2021. All UN agencies will support line ministries to integrate SDGs into 2017 plans in the coming weeks. The Government and United Nations has also started implementation Stage 3 which has 2 components. Component (a) is to set up the overall SDG monitoring system and component (b) strengthening line ministries systems to incorporate SDGs. The meeting highlighted the necessity to identify an overall SDGs implementation coordination body according to the options proposed by the UN. This will be approved in the coming weeks. The participants also discussed holding a side event on the progress with mainstreaming the 2030 Agenda in Turkmenistan during the Global Sustainable Transport Conference to be held on November 26-27, 2016.

  • New Regulations in Turkmenistan: Empowering Water Users’ Groups Oct 19, 2016

    The Mejlis of Turkmenistan has approved the law on the adoption and enforcement of the Water Code of Turkmenistan. The newly adopted code includes articles that enable community-based management of water resources by expanding the authority over management of the water resources to the water users’ groups and associations.

  • Regional Cooperation: Trade and Statistics Sep 30, 2016

    The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) promotes access to high quality reliable data. Together with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the State Statistics Committee of Turkmenistan, UNDP held a four-day regional training on international trade statistics for representatives of the statistics committees of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China, India and Iran.

    Ashgabat, September 20, 2016. The Government of Turkmenistan has formally adopted a list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 148 targets and 198 indicators to be implemented over the next 15 years. The government’s decision, outlined in the diplomatic note, dated 20th September, was conveyed to Ms. Jacinta Barrins, UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan, at her meeting with Mr. Rashid Meredov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
